PACE YOURSELF II
A Flexible Detection of Sound
Glendale Jazz & Blues Festival, 2008
Pace Yourself II is a live drawing event that stretched over the two-day 25th Annual Jazz & Blues Festival exploring syncopation, rhythm and improvisation in a visual form. By mediating on improvisation and sound this project attempted to make what is audible, visual. Each day ten artists continuously draw on an 8-foot high by 20-foot wide curved wall. Responding only to sounds from the festival this select group of visual artists create an ever-changing surface of lines, shapes, forms and marks that harmoniously dance or unexpectedly collide across the surface. Musicians playing in the festival provide source material for a durational drawing that is always in flux.
