Waist/
Waste Room

on the Edge of Fashion

State University Art Museum
Tempe, Arizona
Waist/ Waste Room also takes place in the women and men
public bathrooms of the ASU art museum. For the duration of the opening
reception (approximately three hours) Ellsworth positions her body in
a single stall in the women’s bathroom. While eating and disposing
of mini-powdered doughnuts she recounts stories of fittings and (mis)fittings
of her body in flesh, clothing, and in an image-obsessed culture. Ellsworths
voice is amplified in the men bathroom as less-than-a-whisper. A personal
narrative in a public domain. A private and familiar activity amongst
the unfamiliar public. When performed at the Arizona State University
Art Musuem the video screens were replaced with periscopes.
