Well, I've Been Standing Here
2011
Well, I’ve Been Standing Here re-imagines a scene found in many Christian religions with Jesus Christ in flowing robes in the middle of billowing clouds. In Ellsworth’s installation she includes a pedestal and stair-climber-exercise-contraption where a sculpture of Jesus would traditionally be placed. The absence of figure invites viewers to imagine their own figure or non-figure at the center.
Ellsworth also activates the installation with a performance called Stand Back. A performer appears as a sister-wife vision (imagine Stevie Nicks) moving slowly up and down on the stair-climber as fans blow pink chiffon around her head.
